Alright, now that you’ve voted and are sitting around anxiously for the results, here’s what you can do to make sure we never end up this anxious about retaining our basic human rights ever again:

  • Look up when the primary and general election in 2019 is. Set up two Google Calendar reminders for those days. For each, one the week before so you can hype yourself and your friends up, and one to actually go do it.
  • Look up when the primary and general election in 2020 is.

    Set reminders.

  • Look up when the primary and general election in 2021 is. Set reminders.

  • etc.

Okay, okay, I’ll do some of the work for you. The upcoming election days, always the

Tuesday following the first Monday of November (aka Nov 2-8), are:

  • November 5th, 2019
  • November 3rd, 2020
  • November 2nd, 2021
  • November 8th, 2022
  • November 7th, 2023
  • November 5th, 2024

Primaries, however, vary by state, which is why I can’t just give those dates to you. They might not even be set so far ahead of time where you are.

My POINT, however, is that voting is something that happens every year, and often twice a year

If you don’t want to get fucked over by federal government, by US Senators from states you wouldn’t be caught dead in, by unfit presidents, if you don’t want to fear for your life feeling like people that aren’t accountable to you are making horrific decisions for you, you must vote in every election.

Here’s a schedule I found for one of the cities of Virginia:

image

I don’t live in that city so I have a different timeline for when certain public servants get elected and all that, but it shows the dates of primaries which will be the same throughout my state. In addition to representatives, there’s measures and amendments to vote for every year. Just because you’re not paying attention, doesn’t mean those things aren’t being decided.

The good thing about shitty voter turnout on an annual basis is that most of these off-years don’t have any lines during voting. You get to pop in and out and wow, that was easy! The bad thing is, of course, that people who don’t have your best interests at heart have been relying on your not showing up for decades and they’ve got one hell of a head start. Catch up and overtake them.

If you have already developed a voting habit, huzzah! If you’re just starting, these calendar reminders are just a way for you to start internalizing how important it is to vote every time, and influencing your friends and family to also understand the importance so that we can make long-lasting changes for the better. If you have a system you prefer over Google reminders, use those to help you instead. Whatever it takes.

Anyway, set a timer for 15 minutes, and as fast as you can, just find all the information you can about upcoming election dates and set those reminders for yourself. Quick, like ripping a bandaid off.

Do it now, while you’re scared shitless and feeling helpless, and not tomorrow when you’ve found out the election results and relaxed.

I don’t know why I didn’t mention this in the original post, but just in case it hasn’t occurred to you to think of it this way

—

The REASON that it’s important to vote always is that your mayors, your governor, your state legislatures (and many others) are a buffer between you and the federal government. They can protect you, but they can also put you at risk. They can be your allies, or they can be your enemies. It’s important to vote for all levels of government so that you and others are always best protected by people who are more likely to have your best interests at heart.

Additionally, the people who are propped up at a local level are also the people who go on to have national careers. If you want your future pool of federal candidates to improve, local voting is vital.

rafi-dangelo:

The US pretending to bring democracy to other countries is so funny when we vote on a non-holiday workday where people can wait up to six hours for a machine that may record their vote incorrectly to defeat a minority party that controls all three branches of government.

The tea is SCALDING.

not to be all “tw*light did nothing wrong” but misogyny honest to god killed the hunger games

it was no masterpiece sure but it also sure as hell wasnt the love triangle bullshit everyone made it out to be. seriously everyone blames this whole “YA fiction with the special One and teens overthrowing the oppressive government tropes” trend on the hunger games but the truth is that none of those books are anything like thg

god!!! im mad!! name one cliche YA novel where the government actually is BAD like not just “oh love is illegal” or “they barcode you!!uwu” instead of like. actual slavery and rampant poverty while the rich waste their money on dumb bullshit!! and name one main character who ACTUALLY suffers under the government’s regime!! who actually starves and works and suffers and has genuine REASON to rebel!! thg is the only YA book that had anything to say about wealth disparity and the dehumanization of the poor,, every other YA book uses it as a plot device to put some dumbass romance together or show how “badass” the MC is!! thg is genuinely emotional and the focus of the book isnt katniss’s archery and how cool she is and its NOT gale or fucking peeta bread. and then the marketing for the stupid fucking movies took the WHOLE POINT OF THE BOOK (which is to satirize and critique how women in entertainment have any serious things about them ignored in favor of whatever dress theyre wearing or who they’re dating) and turns that into……….. a fucking love triangle. and then the world forgets it because its just another dumb teen girl series. okay.

Me @ myself rn

oh also last thing. the fact that at the end katniss chose to kill Coin (the rebel leader/soon to be newest dictator) instead of just having a plain and simple boring happy ending shows just how different thg is from the YA fiction its compared to. no other book in this genre would have the guts (or even the idea) to put out such a blatant, obvious “the fight against oppression never ends, stay diligent” message and thg is iconic for it and it shows how much thought was actually put into its message. im sorry to susan collins for my 12 yo self for not understanding at the time and thinking it was just bad writing

thanks to everyone adding on about the representation! about finnick’s story and being trafficked! and about peeta and his disability!! and katniss and her  indigenous coding and PTSD!! And about how it shows how war n dictatorships always prey on marginalized groups!! and a billion other things!!! that the movies just fucked off n forgot about!!!

Like honestly its been a min since i read the books but katniss didn’t give a fuck about either boy everything she did rooted back to her sister and the idea of being free. Yea she liked gale but she had more important things to deal with atm. She volunteers for prim, she wanted to cut peetas throat when he said he was in love with her. She basically was playing the fake till u make it game cause now she was in the public eye, and she needed to survive. She didn’t really worry about peeta in the games, and allied with a young girl. When katniss lost her, and peeta was injured, she didn’t really have much of a choice but to take care of him. And what those two had was strong, but it was barely romantic. It was a will to survive. She proposed suicide because it wasn’t she would rather die than kill peeta. it was because she absolutely loathed the capital for what they put her through, and she would rather die than play their game. And that’s just in the first book. As far as I can recall.

“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
-Orwell, 1984

Normally, I feel like people are way too liberal in calling things “Orwellian”, because I’ve seen people claim everything from speed limits to environmental laws to privately owned security cameras in stores as being “Orwellian”, but Trump, in this instance, is utterly Orwellian.
